2027 Permit Renewals Open: Carriers Must Act on UCR and IFTA

Carriers and owner-operators should begin preparing for 2027 registration and fuel-tax renewals, with the filing window for Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) opening Oct. 1, 2026. IFTA credentials and state-specific weight-and-distance requirements may also require renewal before the new registration year.

UCR Registration Opens Oct. 1

The 2027 UCR registration period is scheduled to open Oct. 1, 2026, and run through Dec. 31, 2026. Interstate motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies subject to the program must register annually and pay the applicable fee.

The UCR program covers 41 states. Carriers based in a state that does not participate in UCR are not automatically exempt; they must register through a participating jurisdiction when required.

The nonparticipating jurisdictions listed in the registration information are Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.

Federal regulators have proposed higher UCR fees for the 2027 registration year. The available information cites an average increase of approximately 18% to 20% compared with 2026 rates. Final fees should be confirmed when the registration schedule is issued.

IFTA Credentials and Renewal Timing

The International Fuel Tax Agreement applies across the 48 contiguous states and 10 Canadian provinces. Carriers operating in IFTA jurisdictions must maintain current credentials and comply with fuel-use reporting requirements.

Carriers may have a grace period during the first two months of a new registration year to display renewed IFTA credentials. That grace period applies to displaying the credentials and does not replace the requirement to submit a renewal application by the applicable deadline.

Carriers should verify their base-jurisdiction requirements rather than rely on another company’s renewal schedule. Renewal periods may be assigned in March, April, May, June, July, September, October, November or December, depending on the jurisdiction.

State Weight-and-Distance Requirements

In addition to UCR and IFTA, carriers may need to renew state-specific weight-and-distance permits or accounts. Requirements and deadlines vary by jurisdiction, vehicle operation and the routes traveled.

Because these credentials are administered separately, completing a UCR renewal does not satisfy state weight-and-distance obligations. Carriers should review each jurisdiction in which they operate and confirm whether a permit, account or renewal filing is required for 2027.

Missed Renewals Can Affect Compliance

UCR registration is an annual requirement. Missing the filing deadline can result in enforcement action, monetary penalties or complications during a roadside inspection. Carriers should keep confirmation records for each completed filing and verify that renewed credentials are available before operating under the new registration year.
