“Big Fix” Planned for Major Freight Corridor
Mississippi is preparing to launch the I-20/I-55 Freight Corridors Improvement Project, a major construction effort that will repair 36 bridges and improve more than 30 miles of interstate. The project, known as “The Big Fix,” is expected to have limited traffic impacts through 2026 before two planned full closures affect I-20.
Major Interstate Repairs Planned
The project will include bridge repairs, interstate resurfacing and other roadway improvements along the I-20/I-55 freight corridor in Mississippi.
Work will cover approximately 16 miles of interstate in each direction, or 32 miles in total. Because the interstate includes multiple lanes, the project represents improvements across approximately 121 total lane miles.
In addition to the 36 bridges, crews will address pavement and other infrastructure needs along the heavily traveled corridor, which serves regional freight and passenger traffic.
Full Closures Planned for I-20
Traffic impacts are expected to remain minimal through 2026, according to project information. That is expected to change during the next phase of construction.
Two 45-day full closures are planned for I-20, with one closure affecting each direction of travel. The closures are expected to be scheduled separately, allowing construction crews to complete major work while maintaining access in the opposite direction.
Motor carriers and other highway users should anticipate detours and longer travel times when the full closures begin. Specific closure dates and detour routes were not included in the available project information.
