Highway Bill Gains More Momentum in Congress
Congress has approved a short-term extension of federal highway authorities, giving lawmakers additional time to negotiate a longer-term surface transportation bill before the current authorization expires Sept. 30.
Extension avoids immediate lapse
The House approved the measure by a 370-48 vote after returning from its August recess. The legislation extends existing transportation authorities and provides additional time for Congress to work on a broader, five-year highway package.
The extension is intended to prevent a lapse in federal highway programs while lawmakers continue negotiations. A longer-term bill is expected to address highway funding, freight mobility and safety programs.
Five-year highway bill remains unresolved
In May, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee advanced the BUILD America 250 Act. The proposal would authorize approximately $580 billion over five years for surface transportation programs.
The legislation also seeks to strengthen the Highway Trust Fund and address longstanding challenges involving infrastructure conditions, roadway safety and freight movement. However, Congress has not yet completed work on the broader highway bill.

With the Sept. 30 deadline approaching, the short-term extension gives lawmakers additional time to resolve differences over transportation funding and policy provisions. The extension is expected to keep federal highway programs operating while negotiations continue.
