Louisiana Teen Arrested After Cup Thrown From Pickup Shatters Semi-Truck Windshield
A 16-year-old Louisiana resident has been arrested after investigators said he threw a large drink cup from a pickup truck, striking an oncoming semi-truck and severely injuring the driver’s eye.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office announced on September 3, 2026, that deputies arrested the teenager and charged him with one count each of negligent injury and simple criminal damage. Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities did not release his name.
The charges stem from an incident reported on August 16 along Highway 1054 near Forbes Road in the Spring Creek area of Tangipahoa Parish.
According to investigators, a semi-truck driver was traveling on the highway late in the evening when the truck’s windshield suddenly shattered. Glass from the windshield severely injured one of the driver’s eyes.
Authorities initially asked the public for help identifying the vehicle involved. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office shared dashcam footage following the incident. The video showed the moments surrounding the windshield strike and was later circulated by local media as investigators worked to identify the pickup truck and its occupants.
Tips from the public helped investigators track the vehicle to the Kentwood area, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The investigation revealed the teen, who was a passenger in the truck, threw a large drink cup out of his window, which struck the oncoming semi-truck,” TPSO said in announcing the arrest.
The sheriff’s office thanked members of the public whose information helped investigators identify and locate the vehicle.
The incident highlights the serious risks created when objects are thrown from moving vehicles. Even an item that appears lightweight can become a dangerous projectile when it strikes a truck traveling at highway speed. In this case, investigators said the cup shattered the semi’s windshield and sent glass into the driver’s cab.
For professional drivers, windshield damage is more than a maintenance concern. A sudden impact can obstruct visibility, cause injuries and make it difficult to maintain control of a large commercial vehicle.
