9/11 Memorial Events Trigger Road Closures Beyond New York City

Road closures, security perimeters and memorial events planned for the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks could create delays for truck drivers in parts of New York and other states on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026.

Lower Manhattan closures and security measures

Family members of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are scheduled to gather at the National 9/11 Memorial plaza in Lower Manhattan to read the names of those killed.

The annual ceremony is expected to include multiple moments of silence. Officials also plan an expanded police presence and security measures, including fencing installed by the U.S. Secret Service along the east side of the West Side Highway and around the perimeter of the 9/11 Memorial.

Several streets in Lower Manhattan will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians during the ceremony. Drivers should expect extensive security perimeters, restricted access and delays from the morning through the evening.

Tribute in Light

The Tribute in Light is scheduled to operate from dusk on Sept. 11 until dawn on Sept. 12, weather and operating conditions permitting. Additional street closures and traffic controls are expected in the surrounding area.

The events require a larger-than-usual deployment of police officers and could affect traffic moving through Lower Manhattan, including local deliveries and other commercial vehicle operations.

Other memorial events

A separate memorial ceremony at the Del Rio International Bridge is expected to affect traffic for approximately one hour Friday morning. The bridge is designated for noncommercial traffic, so the event is not expected to directly affect commercial trucks using commercial border crossings.

Memorial events also are planned in Virginia, Pennsylvania and other locations. State and local agencies may impose temporary road closures, parking restrictions or traffic controls near ceremonies.

Truck drivers and fleet operators should check state 511 systems and transportation department closure notices before dispatching routes. Conditions may change as agencies finalize security and traffic plans.
