HOS Exemption Granted for Steel Coil Transport | Land Line Media

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued a provisional renewal allowing designated steel-coil transport drivers to work up to 16 consecutive hours in a duty period and return to work after at least eight hours off duty.

Exemption Extends Duty Period

The exemption permits covered drivers serving steel-coil transportation operations and related shipping locations to operate beyond the standard 14-hour duty-period limit when necessary.

Under the provisional renewal, eligible drivers may work a duty period of up to 16 consecutive hours and resume work after receiving at least eight consecutive hours off duty.

Limited to Designated Steel-Coil Operations

The relief applies specifically to designated drivers transporting steel coils. The exemption does not represent a broad change to federal hours-of-service requirements for all commercial motor carriers or drivers.

Carriers and drivers operating under the renewal must follow the conditions established by FMCSA, including the requirements governing the covered transportation activities and qualifying operations.
