Bald Tires and No CDL Create a ‘Horrifically Unsafe’ Trucking Crisis

An Arizona Department of Public Safety inspection found that a truck hauling an oversize load was being operated by a driver without a valid commercial driver’s license and had multiple severely damaged tires, according to the agency.

Inspection Finds Severe Tire Damage

AZDPS said several of the truck’s tires were in “horrifically unsafe” condition. The agency reported that the tires were either bald or worn down to exposed, shredded interior components.

The condition of the tires raised concerns about the truck’s ability to safely operate while transporting the oversize load. The inspection also identified that the driver did not have a valid CDL.

Safety Concerns Highlighted

Bald or severely damaged tires can compromise a commercial vehicle’s traction, handling and braking performance. Tire condition is an important part of commercial vehicle inspections, particularly when a truck is carrying an oversize or overweight load.

AZDPS did not provide additional details in the information available, including the location of the inspection or the specific enforcement action taken.
