Dash Cam Helps Track Down Trucker, Land Line Media Reports
A truck driver suspected of fleeing a fatal crash was located several hours later after police used dash cam footage recorded by another truck parked nearby, according to authorities.
Dash cam footage assists investigation
The footage reportedly captured the truck involved in the crash and helped investigators identify and track down the driver. The collision involved a motorcyclist, although the available information does not specify the location, time or circumstances of the incident.
Authorities said the suspected driver was found and arrested several hours after the crash. The case remains subject to the ongoing investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
Growing role of truck cameras
Dash cams have become increasingly common in commercial trucks and fleets. Earlier systems generally recorded only the road ahead, while newer setups can capture forward, side, rear and driver-facing views.
Many commercial systems also include GPS tracking, night vision, cloud access and mobile connectivity. Footage can help investigators establish what happened during a crash, while fleet operators may use the systems to review driving events and provide coaching.
Col Blanch said the incident demonstrated the value of dashboard camera footage in helping police investigate serious crashes.
Additional evidence for fleets
Dash cam footage can provide information that is separate from a truck’s advanced driver-assistance systems, braking equipment and other safety technology. While those systems are designed to help prevent or reduce collisions, cameras document events before, during and after an incident.
Some trucking-focused systems use multiple synchronized cameras and artificial-intelligence software to identify events such as following too closely, rolling stops, speeding, distraction, phone use and failure to wear a seat belt. Ruggedized recording equipment may also be installed behind the dash to preserve footage after a severe crash.
