Florida Officials Charge 3 in CDL Fraud Scheme
Florida officials have arrested three Miami-Dade County employees in an alleged scheme to obtain commercial driver’s licenses after investigators determined that two of the employees had failed a required CDL test.
Three Miami-Dade Employees Arrested
Miami-Dade County officials announced Tuesday, Aug. 25, that Matthew Howard Jr., Keith Garrod Jones and Vanessa Erika Roberts had been arrested in connection with the alleged scheme.
Howard, 35, and Jones, 36, are employees of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department. Florida’s Office of the Attorney General determined that the two men failed to pass a required commercial driver’s license examination, according to officials.
Charges Filed Against Two Employees
Howard and Jones each face charges of official misconduct, a third-degree felony, and unlawful compensation or reward for official behavior, a second-degree felony.
Investigators allege that neither employee was eligible to receive the treatment involved in the CDL-related scheme. The information provided by officials did not specify the charges against Roberts.
Investigation Into CDL Process
The arrests highlight an alleged effort to improperly obtain commercial driving credentials through the county system. Officials have not released additional details about the testing process, the role each suspect allegedly played or whether further arrests are expected.
