Locked Steering Sends Humvee Load Scattering Across I-295, Trucker Says

Trucker Reports Locked Steering Led to Humvee Load Loss on I-295 in Virginia

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — A tractor-trailer hauling two up-armored Humvees crashed Friday morning while exiting Interstate 295 in Virginia after the driver reported that the truck’s steering locked, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2026, on the exit ramp from I-295 to southbound Route 301 at Exit 41B, near the Hanover County-Henrico County line. The incident closed multiple lanes and left the two military-style vehicles scattered across the roadway.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the tractor-trailer, which was transporting two up-armored Humvees, was exiting I-295 when the driver reported that the vehicle’s steering locked,” a Virginia State Police spokesperson said.

Police said the tractor-trailer entered the gore area at the interchange, crossed the southbound lanes of Route 301 and struck another vehicle. The truck then lost the two Humvees from its trailer.

Images released by Virginia State Police showed the Humvees separated from the trailer and positioned on the roadway near the interchange. The crash involved a heavy combination vehicle carrying an unusually large and specialized load, requiring responders to manage both the collision scene and the displaced cargo.

The tractor-trailer driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said. No additional injury information was provided, including the condition of the occupants of the vehicle that was struck.

The crash remains under investigation. Police have not released information about the cause of the reported steering failure beyond the driver’s account, and no determination has been announced regarding any mechanical or operational factors.

At the time of the update, Virginia State Police said the following closures remained in effect:

  • Southbound I-295 at Exit 41B
  • Northbound I-295 at Exit 41B
  • All southbound lanes of Route 301

The closures affected a major interchange connecting I-295 with Route 301. For commercial drivers, the incident highlights how quickly a mechanical problem on an exit ramp can become a wider traffic and recovery operation, particularly when a truck is carrying heavy, high-value or specialized equipment.

A steering-related loss of control can leave a driver with limited ability to remain within a ramp or lane, especially near an interchange where traffic lanes converge and road geometry changes. In this case, police said the truck crossed the roadway and struck another vehicle before the load was lost. The available information does not indicate whether the reported steering problem was confirmed or what caused it.

Details about the trailer, the carrier, the Humvees’ destination and the extent of damage to the equipment were not released. Investigators also did not provide a timeline for reopening the affected lanes.
