More Trucking Money, Better Roads? What Truckers Need to Know

Fresno County voters will decide whether to dedicate additional sales tax revenue to transportation projects, including road repairs, transit, and congestion improvements. Supporters say the measure would provide a reliable source of funding, while opponents argue it would not do enough to address the region’s transportation needs.

Measure Would Direct Most Funding to Roads

Under the proposal, approximately two-thirds of the revenue would be used for road repairs and related improvements. Transit programs would receive about 25% of the funding, with the remainder directed toward other transportation and congestion-related projects.

Supporters say maintaining a dedicated transportation funding source is important as local agencies face ongoing maintenance and infrastructure demands. Fresno County currently imposes a 1.975% local sales tax in addition to California’s 6% state sales tax.

Truckers Raise Concerns Over Lane Restrictions

One of the primary concerns among truckers and other transportation users is a provision that would prohibit adding lanes for truck and passenger vehicle traffic.

Opponents contend that the restriction could limit the county’s ability to address congestion and accommodate future freight growth. They also argue that the measure falls short of the investment needed to improve the roads and corridors used by commercial vehicles.

Potential Impact on Freight Routes

The outcome could affect the roads truckers use throughout Fresno County, including routes that serve agricultural, distribution, and regional freight operations. While the measure would provide funding for repairs and other transportation programs, questions remain about whether the planned spending would improve capacity as well as pavement conditions.
