Tesla Unveils Cybercab Robotaxis, Transforming the Future of Urban Travel

Tesla launches robotaxi service with steering-wheel-free Cybercabs

NEW YORK — Tesla sent dozens of self-driving Cybercabs onto the streets of Austin, Texas, on Thursday, launching a robotaxi service built around vehicles that have no steering wheels, brake pedals or other manual controls for passengers to use in an emergency.
The rollout is a major test for Elon Musk’s vision of a transportation system in which vehicles operate without a human driver. It also places Tesla in competition with established autonomous-vehicle operators as the company works to recover from a slump in vehicle sales.
The gold-colored Cybercabs were deployed in Austin as Tesla prepared for an invitation-only launch event later Thursday. The company has indicated that it intends to expand the service to other cities, although it was not clear how soon that broader rollout would occur.
Tesla promoted the launch on X with the message, “No steering wheel, no pedals.” Musk also posted an image of a large Cybercab above the Austin skyline and later described the rollout as “A Storm of Cybercabs.”
The vehicles’ lack of conventional driver controls sets the Cybercab apart from most other automated-driving vehicles now in service. Passengers will not have a steering wheel or brake pedal available if they become uncomfortable or if the vehicle encounters a problem. That design places the entire responsibility for driving on Tesla’s automated system.
For professional drivers, the launch offers another indication of how quickly vehicle manufacturers are moving to test automated transportation on public roads. The Austin deployment involves passenger taxis rather than trucks, but the same issues—vehicle control, emergency response, operating limits and government oversight—are central to any expansion of automated vehicles.
Tesla trails Waymo, the self-driving taxi leader, in both the number of vehicles deployed and the number of trips completed. Waymo has already built experience operating autonomous ride services, while Tesla is beginning its public robotaxi effort with a more limited deployment.
The difference matters because autonomous taxi services must operate safely around pedestrians, cyclists, conventional motorists and commercial vehicles. Their performance is also judged by how they respond to construction zones, changing traffic patterns and unexpected incidents on city streets.
Tesla’s launch comes as the company faces pressure in its core vehicle business. Tesla shares had fallen amid declining vehicle sales, but rose more than 5% Thursday as investors responded to hopes that the robotaxi service could gain traction quickly.
The company’s ability to expand the service will depend not only on customer acceptance but also on regulatory requirements. The vehicles’ missing manual controls have drawn particular attention because they remove the traditional means by which a human occupant could take over from an automated system.
That concern became more immediate Friday, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had opened an audit into the Cybercabs. The agency said the review would examine whether the vehicles comply with federal safety rules. The filing followed Tesla’s launch and the company’s assertion, through a self-certification submitted to the agency, that the vehicles meet applicable requirements.
The NHTSA audit adds a significant layer of scrutiny to Tesla’s plans. Federal regulators will be examining how the vehicles qualify under existing rules and whether their design complies with requirements that traditionally apply to vehicles equipped with driver controls.
Tesla has not provided a clear timetable for a wider rollout in the information available about the launch. The Austin deployment is therefore an initial step rather than evidence of a nationwide service. The number of vehicles on the road, the areas they can serve and the circumstances under which they operate will determine how much practical ground the company can cover.
The launch also tests whether riders are willing to surrender direct control completely. Passengers in conventional taxis and ride-hailing vehicles can generally communicate with a human driver, while occupants of the Cybercab will rely on the automated system and Tesla’s operating procedures.
For now, Tesla is betting that customers will accept that tradeoff. The Austin service will show whether the company can persuade riders to use vehicles with no steering wheel or pedals while meeting the safety and regulatory standards required for public-road operations.
