Texas Scrap Yard Yields $800K in Stolen Industrial Equipment

$800,000 in stolen industrial equipment recovered from Texas scrap yard, police say
More than 160,000 pounds of industrial equipment reported stolen from a Texas company has been recovered from a scrap yard in Harris County, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constableβs Office.
The equipment was valued at more than $800,000, authorities said. The recovery followed an investigation into a theft report made by a local company.
The constableβs office reported the results of the investigation on Oct. 15. As part of the case, Corporal Ramirez traced some of the companyβs missing equipment to a scrap yard in Harris County.
Investigators recovered the property they had identified at the yard. While that recovery was taking place, officers found additional equipment belonging to the same company, according to the constableβs office.
βWhile recovering the property, additional equipment belonging to the same company was discovered and recovered,β the agency said.
Harris County Constable Mark Herman said the investigation indicated that the value of all property reported stolen by the company could be significantly higher than the equipment initially recovered.
βFurther investigation revealed that the total estimated value of the stolen property reported by the company could approach $2 million,β Herman said.
The recovered material represents a substantial amount of industrial property by both weight and value. For trucking and industrial operators, the case also highlights the importance of maintaining accurate equipment records and being able to identify machinery, components and other assets after they leave a work site.
Industrial equipment can be difficult to track once it is dismantled, moved or sent to a recycling or scrap facility. Identification numbers, purchase records and other documentation can help investigators connect recovered property to its original owner. The constableβs office did not provide additional details about how the equipment was transported to the scrap yard or how it was identified during the investigation.
Authorities also did not announce any arrests or criminal charges in connection with the thefts. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
