Texas Unveils $138 Billion Traffic Relief Plan
Texas is planning an estimated $138 billion in transportation investments over the next decade, with projects focused on reducing congestion, improving roadway safety, supporting freight movement and expanding truck parking.
10-Year Transportation Program
The Texas Department of Transportation has released its 2027 Unified Transportation Program, a 10-year plan that outlines transportation investments through 2036. Gov. Greg Abbott and TxDOT announced the program as a statewide effort to preserve infrastructure and improve mobility.
The plan covers transportation projects across Texas and is intended to guide funding decisions for highways, roads and other critical infrastructure during the 10-year period.
Focus on Congestion and Safety
According to TxDOT, the program prioritizes projects designed to ease traffic congestion, improve roadway safety and maintain the state’s transportation system. Investments are also intended to help keep traffic moving on major corridors and surface streets.
The plan comes as Texas continues to experience significant growth in population, commercial activity and roadway use. Construction projects associated with the program are expected to affect travel conditions in communities across the state as work progresses.
Freight Movement and Truck Parking
Freight transportation is another focus of the 2027 UTP. The planned investments are intended to strengthen supply-chain connections and improve the movement of commercial traffic throughout Texas.
The program also includes funding for truck parking, an issue that affects drivers and carriers operating on heavily traveled corridors. Additional parking capacity can support freight operations and provide more designated areas for commercial vehicles during required rest periods.
TxDOT’s 10-year plan will serve as a framework for advancing transportation projects and allocating resources across Texas through 2036.
