Thousands of New Truck Parking Spots Coming to 12 States
The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced $200 million in federal funding for 14 truck parking projects across 12 states. The projects are expected to add more than 2,400 commercial truck parking spaces, including new and expanded facilities along major freight corridors.
Projects Span 12 States
The funding is being awarded through the department’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects, or INFRA, program. The projects are located in:
- Arkansas
- California
- Connecticut
- Georgia
- Iowa
- Illinois
- Minnesota
- North Carolina
- Nebraska
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Wisconsin
The investments include new parking facilities, expansions at existing locations and rest-area projects in states including Minnesota and Arkansas.
Georgia Port Project to Add About 275 Spaces
The Georgia Ports Authority will receive $11.95 million to develop the Port of Savannah Commercial Motor Vehicle Parking Area adjacent to Georgia State Route 21 in Garden City, Georgia.
The facility is expected to provide approximately 275 truck parking spaces near one of the nation’s major freight and port complexes.
Funding Targets Ongoing Parking Shortage
The federal investment is intended to address the continuing shortage of safe and available truck parking, particularly along interstate, port and border freight corridors. Limited parking can make it difficult for drivers to find spaces when required to stop for federally mandated rest periods.
The American Trucking Associations welcomed the funding, describing the projects as an investment in truck parking capacity, freight efficiency and working conditions for commercial drivers.
