“Big Fix” Planned for Major Freight Corridor
Mississippi is preparing to launch the I-20/I-55 Freight Corridors Improvement Project, a major construction effort that will repair dozens of bridges and improve more than 30 miles of interstate in the Jackson area. The project, known as “The Big Fix,” is expected to create its most significant traffic impacts after 2026.
Project to Repair Bridges and Interstate Pavement
The Mississippi Department of Transportation project will include repairs to 36 bridges along the I-20/I-55 corridor. Crews also will resurface and repair approximately 16 miles of interstate in each direction, covering 32 miles of roadway and about 121 total lane miles.
The work targets a heavily traveled freight corridor in central Mississippi, where I-20 and I-55 serve as major routes for commercial traffic moving across the southern United States.
Full Interstate Closures Planned
Traffic impacts are expected to remain limited through 2026, but the construction schedule will become more disruptive the following year. Two full interstate closures, each lasting 45 days, are planned—one closure for each direction of I-20.
Additional lane restrictions, bridge work and pavement repairs are expected as construction advances. Specific detour routes and closure dates will be announced as the project schedule develops.
Freight Corridor Improvements
The project is intended to address aging infrastructure along one of Mississippi’s key freight routes. Improvements to the interstate pavement and bridges are expected to support continued commercial traffic while extending the useful life of the corridor.
