UCR Fees Set to Rise 20% Despite Opposition
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is moving forward with a proposed increase in Unified Carrier Registration fees despite opposition from truckers. The recommended changes would raise fees by an average of 20%, with the actual increase varying by entity and applicable fee category.
UCR Board Recommended Fee Increase
The UCR Board of Directors recommended the fee increase, which FMCSA announced in April. The agency’s notice of proposed rulemaking would amend the regulations governing UCR fees for upcoming registration years.
The proposed increase would range from $9 to $9,329 per entity, depending on the applicable fee and registration category. FMCSA said the changes are based on the UCR Board’s recommendation.
Truckers Raise Concerns
Numerous truckers submitted comments arguing that the proposed increase was unfair. Despite that opposition, FMCSA is continuing to advance the recommendation through the federal rulemaking process.
The UCR program applies to participating motor carriers and other entities subject to federal registration requirements. Registration fees are set through the UCR system and vary according to the entity’s applicable category.
Next Steps in the Rulemaking Process
The proposal remains part of FMCSA’s regulatory process. Additional agency action will determine whether the recommended increases are adopted as proposed or modified before taking effect.
