Northeast port begins $3.2 million upgrade at Maine’s International Marine Terminal
Construction is underway at the International Marine Terminal in Portland, Maine, where a $3.2 million project will modernize the facility’s container yard, refrigerated-container storage and terminal access systems.
The Maine Port Authority is advancing the project through the federal Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program, with matching funds from the Maine Department of Transportation. Construction began Aug. 17, according to the MaineDOT. The project is expected to be completed in October.
For trucking companies and drivers serving the terminal, the work will focus on several areas that affect the movement of containers through the facility. Planned improvements include full-depth reconstruction of sections of the container-yard pavement, upgrades to stormwater drainage, additional safety and security features, and new bi-fold speed gates at Gate 1.
The pavement reconstruction is a significant part of the project. Container yards must support heavy equipment, loaded chassis and repeated truck movements, making the condition and strength of the surface important to daily operations. Rebuilding sections of the yard is expected to provide a more durable operating area as cargo moves between ships, storage locations and trucks.
The project also includes improvements to refrigerated-container storage. Refrigerated containers, commonly called reefers, require dependable electrical connections while they are held at a terminal. The work is designed to support a more connected, electrically supported refrigerated logistics system linking ship-to-yard and yard-to-cold-storage movements.

Better coordination between the marine terminal, refrigerated storage and outbound transportation can help keep those shipments moving through the facility’s different handling points. New gates, along with the planned safety and security work, are intended to modernize that access system.
