Colorado State Patrol shared video showing a semi-truck traveling downhill with visibly smoking brakes before entering an emergency runaway truck ramp. The ramp’s deep gravel helped slow the vehicle and bring it to a stop.
The incident illustrates how quickly a brake problem can become more serious on a steep mountain descent. Once a loaded commercial vehicle begins gaining speed, the driver may have limited options to regain control.
Runaway ramps provide a final stopping option
Emergency escape ramps are designed for heavy trucks that can no longer slow or stop using their normal braking systems. The gravel or other arresting material increases resistance and helps bring the vehicle to a controlled stop.
Colorado’s I-70 corridor includes steep grades and mountain passes where drivers must account for changing road conditions, elevation and extended downhill stretches.
Officials remind drivers to monitor brake condition
