Kodiak’s Driverless Trucks Set to Hit Long-Haul Routes This Year

Kodiak expects to deploy driverless trucks for long haul by end of the year
Kodiak AI says it remains on track to begin driverless long-haul commercial service by the end of the year, following continued progress in the engineering, testing and validation work required for deployment.
The company, which develops autonomous driving technology for heavy trucks, said its Autonomy Readiness Measure reached 93% at the end of August, up from 91% at the end of July. Kodiak uses the measure to track progress toward operating its trucks without a driver in the cab during long-haul service.
Don Burnette, Kodiak’s founder and CEO, said the company has identified the remaining work and scheduled the activities needed to complete it.
“What makes this measure powerful is that we know exactly what stands between us and driver-out long-haul operations, and that list continues to get shorter month after month,” Burnette said. “We have identified and scheduled the remaining work, which is concentrated on final engineering verification and validation activities.”
Burnette said Kodiak expects to complete its long-haul safety case before the end of the year and then launch driverless service.
A safety case is the body of evidence used to show that an autonomous system can operate safely under defined conditions. For Kodiak, the remaining work involves final verification and validation of the technology and its performance. The company did not provide a specific launch date or identify the routes that would be used for the initial driverless service.
For professional drivers, the announcement represents another step in the development of autonomous trucking, but it also highlights the amount of testing and documentation manufacturers say must be completed before removing the driver from the vehicle.
Kodiak said its long-haul safety case builds on work completed for its commercial industrial operation in the Permian Basin of West Texas. In that deployment, 35 driverless trucks have been operating commercially with no humans in the cab. The trucks haul frack sand in the oil field.
The Permian Basin operation gives Kodiak an existing commercial deployment on which to build its long-haul program. Long-haul trucking, however, involves different operating conditions, including extended travel over public roads and a wider range of traffic, weather and roadway environments. The company’s stated remaining work is focused on engineering verification and validation before it begins driver-out operations in that segment.
Kodiak has also been pursuing regulatory and testing approvals as it develops its autonomous truck program. The company recently received a permit for autonomous truck testing in California, according to related company information.
The planned service would be a “driver-out” operation, meaning the truck would perform the long-haul driving task without a human driver seated in the cab. Kodiak’s update did not describe how the company would handle support, maintenance, loading or unloading, or other parts of the freight operation outside the driving task.
The company’s progress comes as trucking continues to place close attention on safety, driver qualifications and vehicle oversight. Federal and state enforcement campaigns, including roadside inspections and focused operations targeting unsafe drivers and vehicles, continue to emphasize that motor carriers remain responsible for safe operations.
That broader safety environment is relevant to autonomous trucking because the removal of a driver does not remove the need for documented procedures, vehicle inspections, system monitoring or operational accountability. Kodiak’s announcement centers on its safety case and technical readiness rather than on changes to the compliance responsibilities of motor carriers or other parties involved in freight transportation.
Roadside enforcement officials have stressed the consequences of unsafe operations for drivers and carriers. Violations can place a driver or vehicle out of service, disrupt scheduled loads and lead to financial or reputational consequences for the operating carrier. Those concerns currently apply to conventional trucking operations, while autonomous developers are working to demonstrate that their systems can meet the required safety standards in commercial service.
Kodiak has not said how many trucks would be included in the initial long-haul launch. It also has not announced the customers, freight lanes or operating area for the service. The company’s current statement is that the final work is concentrated on verification and validation, with the safety case expected to be completed before the end of the year.
If that schedule holds, Kodiak would move from commercial driverless operations in a controlled industrial setting toward driverless long-haul service. The company’s 93% readiness measure indicates that it considers the program close to deployment, but the remaining safety and engineering work must still be completed before the launch.
