Wildfire Shuts Down Major Western Interstate, Land Line Media Reports
A fast-moving wildfire near Floriston along the California-Nevada border has closed westbound Interstate 80 and prompted evacuation warnings in nearby areas, including the region around Boca Reservoir. The fire expanded rapidly Wednesday, reaching more than 600 acres, according to emergency officials.
Westbound I-80 closed at state line
Westbound I-80 is closed at the Nevada state line, with traffic being stopped near Exit 4 at Boomtown and Verdi. The California Highway Patrol reported no estimated reopening time while the fire remains a threat.
The closure was implemented to protect motorists from fire activity and potential rockfall reaching the highway. Motorists and commercial vehicles traveling toward California should expect delays and seek current routing information before entering the area.
Fire grew rapidly near Floriston
The wildfire was first reported near Floriston at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. Initial estimates placed the fire at about 10 acres, but it grew to roughly 20 acres within 45 minutes before expanding beyond 600 acres later in the day.
Cal Fire is working in unified command with the Tahoe National Forest. Emergency crews are continuing suppression operations as the fire moves through vegetation near the interstate and border communities.
Evacuation warnings issued
Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for portions of Sierra County, California, and nearby areas in Nevada. Officials continue to monitor the fire’s movement and its potential effect on residents, transportation routes and surrounding recreational areas.
Westbound I-80 will remain closed until officials determine that conditions are safe for traffic. Commercial drivers should anticipate changing restrictions and should not rely on an immediate reopening of the interstate.
