2027 Permit Renewals Open: Carriers Must Act on UCR and IFTA

Carriers should begin preparing for the 2027 registration and tax-filing cycle. The filing window for Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) opens Oct. 1, 2026, while IFTA and state-specific weight-and-distance renewals may also require action before the end of the year.

UCR registration opens Oct. 1

Interstate motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies subject to the UCR program must register or renew annually. The 2027 UCR registration period begins Oct. 1, 2026, and runs through Dec. 31, 2026.

The UCR program applies to 41 states. Carriers based in a state that does not participate in UCR must still register through a participating jurisdiction if they are subject to the program. Nonparticipating jurisdictions include Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Wyoming and Washington, D.C.

UCR fees for the 2027 registration year are expected to increase from 2026 levels. Carriers should review the applicable fee schedule and complete registration before the Dec. 31 deadline. Late filing or failure to register can result in fines or compliance issues during roadside inspections.

IFTA renewals and credentials

The International Fuel Tax Agreement covers the 48 contiguous states and 10 Canadian provinces. Carriers operating across IFTA jurisdictions must maintain current credentials and comply with annual renewal and reporting requirements.

Jurisdictions generally provide a grace period at the beginning of the new year for displaying renewed IFTA credentials. That grace period applies to displaying the credentials, not to delaying the renewal application. Carriers should submit renewal applications before the end of 2026 and confirm credential-display requirements with the appropriate jurisdiction.

State weight-and-distance requirements

In addition to UCR and IFTA, carriers should review state-specific weight-and-distance tax registrations and permits that apply to their operations. Requirements, renewal dates and fees vary by jurisdiction, particularly for carriers traveling through states with separate mileage or weight-based tax programs.

Owner-operators and fleet managers should inventory their 2027 registrations, verify expiration dates and submit required renewals early. Keeping UCR, IFTA and state-specific credentials current helps carriers avoid preventable enforcement issues as the new registration year begins.
