Thousands of New Truck Parking Spots Coming to 12 States

The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced $200 million in federal funding for 14 truck parking projects across 12 states, with the projects expected to add more than 2,400 public parking spaces along key freight corridors.

Projects span 12 states

The funding was awarded through the DOT’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects, or INFRA, grant program. The projects will support new and expanded truck parking facilities in:

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • North Carolina
  • Nebraska
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

The investments include new rest areas and expanded parking facilities intended to increase available capacity along interstate, port and border freight routes.

Funding targets national parking shortage

Truck parking shortages have made it difficult for drivers to find safe, legal spaces when they reach the end of their available driving time or need to take required rest breaks. The federally funded projects are intended to improve access to public truck parking and support freight movement in areas with limited capacity.

According to the program information, the 14 projects together will deliver more than 2,400 additional truck parking spaces.

Industry group welcomes investment

The American Trucking Associations welcomed the funding announcement, saying expanded truck parking will support safety and efficiency for professional drivers and the broader freight network.

The grants were announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy through the DOT’s INFRA program.
