Laredo Bridge Changes Aim to Cut Cargo Delays
U.S.-Mexico freight operators will receive additional weekend processing time at Laredo’s World Trade Bridge under a three-month pilot program beginning Sept. 5, 2026. The initiative is intended to reduce congestion linked to commercial-vehicle U-turns and improve the movement of cargo through the Laredo Port of Entry.
Saturday hours extended at World Trade Bridge
The extended Saturday operations apply only to the World Trade Bridge. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is adding processing capacity to give carriers, truck drivers and importers more flexibility during periods of elevated cross-border trade.
Laredo is a major gateway for freight moving between the United States and Mexico. The port’s location at the southern end of Interstate 35 connects manufacturers in northern Mexico with distribution centers and markets across the United States.
Pilot targets congestion and delays
The expanded schedule is designed to help reduce bottlenecks caused by commercial vehicles making U-turns while navigating bridge and inspection operations. By providing additional Saturday processing time, authorities aim to improve traffic flow and reduce delays during peak trade periods.
The initiative also could help limit disruptions for carriers and importers by supporting more predictable cargo movements through the port. Officials said the effort is intended to strengthen supply-chain reliability and improve the efficiency of cross-border freight operations.
Program limited to one bridge
The pilot does not apply to all Laredo international bridges. Commercial operators should verify current operating schedules, traffic conditions and inspection requirements before dispatching freight through the World Trade Bridge.
