9/11 Memorial Events Trigger Road Closures Beyond New York City

Commemorative events marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are expected to bring security measures and temporary traffic restrictions to New York City and other locations on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026. Truck drivers should monitor state 511 systems and transportation department alerts before entering affected areas.

Lower Manhattan closures and security measures

Family members of victims of the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are scheduled to gather at the 9/11 Memorial plaza in Lower Manhattan to read the names of those killed.

The ceremony will include multiple moments of silence, including recognition of the thousands of people who later died from illnesses linked to toxic exposure at the World Trade Center site.

New York City officials are expected to establish extensive security perimeters around the memorial and surrounding streets. Measures include an increased police presence and a security fence installed by the U.S. Secret Service along the east side of the West Side Highway and around the 9/11 Memorial.

Historical closure plans have restricted vehicle access south of Canal Street to Battery Place and between Broadway and West Street, with pedestrian restrictions also possible. Official 2026 street closures are expected to be announced by the New York Police Department and New York City Department of Transportation in early September.

Tribute in Light and travel impacts

The Tribute in Light is scheduled to operate from dusk on Sept. 11 until dawn on Sept. 12, weather and operating conditions permitting. Drivers should expect additional street closures and security checkpoints throughout Lower Manhattan during the ceremony and related events.

The scope and timing of restrictions may change as officials finalize security and traffic plans. Commercial drivers traveling through New York City should check current city advisories, 511 services and state DOT closure information before dispatching or entering the area.

Del Rio bridge ceremony

A separate memorial ceremony at the Del Rio International Bridge in Texas is expected to affect traffic for approximately one hour Friday morning. The bridge serves noncommercial traffic only, so the event is not expected to directly restrict commercial truck movements at that crossing.

Officials in other states are also planning ceremonies and observances. Temporary closures or traffic controls may develop without advance notice, making real-time transportation alerts important for drivers operating near event locations.
