Thousands of New Truck Parking Spaces Coming to 12 States
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $200 million in federal funding for 14 truck parking projects across 12 states, supporting the addition of more than 2,400 parking spaces along major freight corridors.
Projects Span 12 States
The grants were announced Oct. 14 through the department’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects, or INFRA, program. The projects are located in:
- Arkansas
- California
- Connecticut
- Georgia
- Iowa
- Illinois
- Minnesota
- North Carolina
- Nebraska
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Wisconsin
The funded work includes new and expanded truck parking facilities, including rest-area improvements in Minnesota and Arkansas. Projects will add parking capacity near interstate highways, ports and border freight corridors.
Addressing a National Parking Shortage
The investment is intended to improve access to safe, legal parking for commercial truck drivers. Limited truck parking remains a challenge across the country, particularly along heavily traveled freight routes where available spaces can fill quickly.
By expanding parking capacity, the projects are expected to give drivers more options when taking federally required rest breaks and reduce the need to search for parking after available spaces have filled.
Industry Welcomes Funding
The American Trucking Associations welcomed the federal investment, describing the grants as a step toward improving safety and efficiency for truck drivers and freight transportation.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the department aimed to use the funding to produce meaningful results for the people who rely on the nation’s infrastructure, including professional truck drivers.
