Oregon Simplifies Weight-Mile Tax Collection Under New Changes
Oregon plans to simplify its weight-mile tax system for commercial carriers beginning in July 2027, reducing the number of tax-rate categories from 85 to 10 and changing how a truck’s taxable weight is determined.
Fewer Weight-Mile Tax Categories
The Oregon Department of Transportation said the changes are intended to make the state’s weight-mile tax easier for carriers to understand and administer. The current system uses 85 different tax rates. Under the revised structure, those rates will be consolidated into 10 categories.
Oregon’s weight-mile tax applies to qualifying commercial vehicles based on the distance they travel on state highways and the vehicle’s taxable weight. The changes are scheduled to take effect in July 2027.
Change to Weight Determination
In addition to reducing the number of rate categories, Oregon will change the method used to determine the weight applied to the tax calculation. The available information does not specify the final weight-determination formula or how individual carriers’ tax bills will change.
ODOT has described the revisions as an effort to simplify weight-mile tax collection for both the state and the trucking industry.
Carrier Recordkeeping Requirements
Carriers participating in Oregon’s weight-mile tax program are required to retain applicable records for at least three years from the date a tax return is filed under Oregon Administrative Rule 740-055-0120.
The weight-mile tax remains separate from Oregon’s broader road-pricing initiatives, including programs that use mileage-based charges and vehicle-location technology to study alternative methods of funding transportation infrastructure.
