Pennsylvania Weighs More Radar, More Tickets Under Proposed Law

Pennsylvania municipal police departments could soon be authorized to use radar to enforce speed limits under Senate Bill 509, which has passed the state Senate. The proposal also would establish limits on speeding citations and the amount of revenue police departments could generate from enforcement.

Bill Would Expand Local Radar Authority

Senate Bill 509 would allow local police in Pennsylvania to use radar guns for speed enforcement. The measure is intended to establish a statewide framework for municipal radar use, which currently is subject to restrictions.

Limits on Tickets and Revenue

The legislation includes provisions designed to limit the number of citations issued and restrict the revenue municipalities can receive from speeding tickets. Those limits are intended to address concerns that traffic enforcement could become overly focused on generating money.

Fair Enforcement Questions Remain

The proposal has also raised questions about how radar enforcement would be carried out and whether drivers would be treated consistently across municipalities. Supporters and critics continue to debate the balance between traffic safety, local enforcement authority and accountability.
