Shell Rotella Expands Heavy-Duty Oil Lineup for Superior Engine Protection

Shell Rotella plans to introduce an upgraded lineup of heavy-duty diesel engine oils in early 2027, with formulations designed to meet the upcoming American Petroleum Institute (API) CL-4 and FB-4 specifications.

New API categories for next-generation diesel engines

The new oil categories are expected to replace the current API CK-4 and FA-4 classifications as engine and emissions-control technologies continue to evolve. Shell said the updated Rotella products are being developed to support both existing heavy-duty equipment and newer diesel engines.

The formulations are intended to improve engine protection, control deposits and meet the requirements of next-generation emissions-control systems. Shell also said the lineup will provide expanded warranty coverage for commercial fleet operators.

Development tied to PC-12 program

Shell Rotella presented details of the upgraded oils during a technical event in Houston. The company discussed the formulation work, engine testing and fleet trials conducted as part of the development process.

The products are part of the PC-12 development program, which is establishing the next generation of performance categories for heavy-duty diesel engine oils. Shell said the new formulations are designed to address the operating demands of newer engine platforms while remaining suitable for existing equipment where approved.

Focus on protection and deposit control

According to Shell, the upgraded Rotella portfolio will focus on enhanced deposit control and protection against the conditions associated with modern heavy-duty diesel engines. The oils are also being developed to support emissions-control hardware used in newer commercial vehicles.

Shell is expected to provide additional product and specification details as the early 2027 introduction approaches.
